The City of Perth has recently completed 2 new taxi ranks for the general public, located in Milligan Street Northbridge. This project was designed primarily to decrease vehicle congestion in the nightclub/hotel district, from taxis looking for fares from late night revellers in the area, and to increase pedestrian safety. The designated area is a parking zone during the day, and becomes a taxi zone only on Friday and Saturday nights, from 6.00 pm onwards. This new zone is located approximately 300 metres from the main entertainment area of Northbridge, and enables people requiring transport, to go to one dedicated area rather than the traditional ‘street hailing’  of taxis.

The City Of Perth constructed the purpose built shelters on both sides of the road, and these are manned by security officers during busy times for public safety. The shelters were fitted with Planet Lighting flat faced minpucks in all the metal cross sections to light the footpath where the patrons queue for taxis. Additionally, the shelters are also fitted with CCTV surveillance cameras for added public safety.

80 of the pucks were fitted to the structures, and this has now created a safer area for the people of Perth needing transport home after late night celebrations.  The Planet product was selected for this project as high light levels from a vandal resistant light source was required. The flat faced minipuck with its small vandal resistant lens, 123 lumens output and a secure threaded fit into the shelter offered the specifiers the solution they were seeking.

As a result of this, traffic and pedestrian safety has been greatly improved in the Northbridge area of Perth.
